The first four months of the current year reflected the continued modest improvement in trading conditions for air products on the domestic market, the chairman of Associated British Cables, Ltd (Mr A. S. Don) told shareholders at the annual meeting yesterday. Exports for both cable and P.V.C. compound continue but because of increased freight costs, together with reductions in export incentives. it is unlikely that the dramatic upsurge in export activity experienced last;
year will be sustained, hj said. ... Export markets are becoming increasingly competi. tive. The improved level in over-all productivity during the second half of last year has been maintained, and profitability for the first four months indicates that very satisfactory earnings will be achieved for the half year to June 30. The order backlog is such that the second half can be faced with quiet confidence, Mr Don said.
