‘Clean up’ TV bid
The Canterbury Television Viewers’ Association might join the Auckland-based “Speak Up for Righteousness’’ (S.P.U.R.) group in a bid to “clean up” television. According to the viewers’ association, more than 2000 signatures have been collected in Christchurch. The groups ask the public in a pamphlet to vote, “yes” to such statements as: “I want to see smut, sex and violence taken off the television screen; I am offended by immorality, foul language, and indecency on tele-
vision; and I will speak up for righteousness.” Other groups would be approached to “register their disgust,” said the secretary of the viewers’ association (Mr. N. M. Rush’}. “The combined impact will be directed towards a vote-of no confidence in the present administration of the Broadcasting Corporation of New Zealand to maintain the standards of decency and respect for human life and values, to which it is by statute obliged,” said Mr Rush.
