Day meeting a disaster

The New Brighton club’s decision to run a day meeting in May proved disastrous at Addington Raceway on Saturday. It is an experiment unlikely to be repeated. The crowd of 4000 was well down on the 10,000 which attended the corresponding meeting on Anzac Day in 1980. On-course betting dropped by $149,930 to $284,429, while the off-course total was $353,499.50, a decrease of $18,115. Next season Anzac Day falls on a Sunday, so the club will have to race on Saturday, but it will be at night.

“We’ve had a lot of pressure on us to race day meetings late in the season, but it seems as that those wl.o sought the change did not support us,” said the president, Mr Horrie Hickman. The club distributed $42,150 in stakes at its meeting on Saturday. As a result of the meagre returns, it will be a heavy loser.
