Runners tour new motorway

About 3000 people took advantage of being able to look over the southern arterial road out of Christchurch yesterday, as they took part in the annual “Press” Park-to-Park fun run.

The course began at Sydenham Park, went along Brougham Street, across the new Lincoln Road overpass, almost to Curletts Road, before returning along the same route — an official distance of 10.5 km.

The significance of the route was that it will be officially opened for motor vehicles today. The run took place in ideal conditions, and old and young, family and friends,

walkers and joggers, unregistered and registered runners alike took advantage of the run organised by the Rotary Club of South Christchurch to raise funds for the Disabled Living Centre in Wordsworth Street. The first runners home were Ivan Shatford, Peter Renner, Neil Lowsley, and Nick Helms, who completed the course holding hands in a time of about 29 minutes. Shatford, Renner, and Lowsley, belong to the New Brighton athletic club, and Helms, a former Christchurch runner, comes from Tauranga. One of the surprises of the day was Mary Warne, who was the first woman home,

in a time of about 32 minutes. The surprise was that she had little previous running. James Hellewell, aged 11, from Cobham Intermediate School, was the first youngster home. The fine times recorded for the course led to some conjecture that the distance may have been nearer 10km than 10.5 km, but no one seemed to mind. Runners were still coming in 80 minutes after the start. A spokesman for the firstaid post at Sydenham Park said that apart from the usual blisters and grazes which accompanied such run--ning events, no serious injuries were incurred.
