Lightbulb sales
Christchurch Jaycees will go from door to door on Saturday, May 23, in an effort to sell their share of 23,000 lightbulbs. The lightbulbs are the North Canterbury-West Coast Jaycees’ allocation of those left from the “Light up a Life” campaign last August. Jaycees throughout the country tried to sell one million bulbs for $1 each, with 50c from each bulb going toward the South Pacific Children's Aid Trust. But supermarkets and other retail outlets discounted their stock, making it difficult for the Jaycees to sell. Sales were so poor that half a million bulbs
had to be returned to the distributor. The North CanterburyWest Coast regional governor (Mr David Mears) said that half of the region’s chapters would take part in the door-to-door sales drive. Other chapters would sell their allocations in their own time. Both 60-watt and 100-watt lightbulbs will be sold. Mr Mears said that it was hoped that supermarkets would not discount their stock again. The Jaycees could not sell the bulbs for less than $1 each because they would not raise enough money to make it worth while,
