Lightly raced Take Care set for Oaks success
By
G. K. YULE
Take Care, a filly with only six race starts to her credit in less than seven weeks, is expected to go close to crediting her trainer-driver, Michael de Filippi with his first New Zealandd Oaks success at Addington RaceWay tomorrow.
Take Care, raced by her. Rakaia Gorge breeder. Mr Eric Mee, has had two wins ' and three placings, the most | recent of which was a most! .unlucky second, a neck from •Twilight Mist in the Breeders Stakes at Addington Raceway on- Tuesday evening. Twilight Mist’s winning time of 3min 24.4 s has been bettered only twice in the Oaks. Ruling Lobell winning i in 3min 24.1 s in 1977 and ' Armalight creating a race I record of 3min 23.9 s a year ago. .
I lake Care put in a most 1 determined run for her plac- ' ing on Tuesday after being ; last at the ;0m and receivi ing a rocky run as s. e tried Ito loop the field and get close to Twilight Mist, which is again among her rivals tomorrow. There was much meTi attached to the win of Twilight Mist as she, too. was well back in the field until inside the final 800 m. The manner in which she fought back over the last 200 m showed that she will again be a leading contender
i for major honours. Unfortu- ' nately she has drawn the second line and will need luck to secure a handy position early. Times Up and Up Tempo, second and third respectively in the D.B. Fillies’ Final at Alexandra Park last week, have both shown sound staying form. Times Up beat the older horses over 3200 m in the Cheviot Cup in March and would only have to reproduce that run to take a prominent part in the finish. Up Tempo has shown to advantage over all distances.
Her ability to maintain a prominent position in her races should ensure that she is in the thick of the finish. Verona, Patsy Marie, By Mys.lf and Hurricane Kellyare others entitled to consideration in what looks a highly interesting field. Dundas, Willie Coon and I Castle Hanover form a likely trio in the second leg, the Bexley Handicap, a race in which the chances of Eden’s Joy, . Shabby Tiger and Chance Fortune are also highly rated.
