New concept in care for elderly
The foundation stone of the $1.3 million Fairhaven Residential Club will be laid at a ceremony on Saturday afternoon. The club, sited by the Fairhaven Hospital, in Harewood Road, Papanui, has been designed as a pilot scheme in community care of elderly people. Planned by the Christchurch Methodist •Central Mission, it will include 50 flatettes built around a community building housing a library, recreational facilities, and lounge areas. It has been designed so that residents can live independently but with community support. Nursing and home help will be avilable if
needed. The residential club will be run by the mission and residents’ committees. An $BOO,OOO subsidy for the 50 flatettes was approved by the Government last year, but the superintendent of the mission (the Rev. W. E. Falkingham), said that the total cost of the project, including the community centre, would be about $1.3 million. The foundation stone will be laid by Dr C. G. Riley, the chirman of the Canterbury Aged people’s Welfare Council. The ceremony, which will start at 2.30 p.m., will be conducted by the Rev. A. K. Woodley, general secretary of the Methodist Church of New Zealand.
