Lipinsky’s socialism

Sir—M. Creel (April 29) is perhaps too hard on Lipinsky and Lipinsky’s criticisms of Soviet socialism. Socialism must indeed be the product of inexorable historical processes; it is simply the historically created opposition to all forms of privilege and class rule. Indeed the historical search for democracy and freedom (not merely “liberty”) is the same thing as the evolution of socialism. But surely M. Creel could admit that Soviet socialism itself has not managed to avoid the error of creating a new ruling class through the, in principle admirable, socialist structure of Soviet democracy. Lipinsky’s criticisms may include “erroneous and fallacious opinions” but he recognises that socialism’s progress has not been without its own errors and fallacies.—Yours, etc.,

K. FEA. April 29, 1981.
