Comalco agreement signed

An agreement on the price of electricity to Comalco, Ltd, for the third potline at its Tiwai Point aluminium smelter was signed by the company and the Minister of Energy (Mr Birch) at Par-, liament yesterday. The price, which is higher than- that negotiated in the original smelter contract, remains confidential.
Mr Birch said that the third potline would provide 350 permanent jobs, and extra jobs in businesses servicing the smelter. It would bring in additional foreign exchange earnings of $55 million annually, and raise aluminium production to about 240,000 tonnes annually.
Mr Birch said that a feature of the agreement was an undertaking by the smelter company to seek establishment of an automotive components fac-tory-nearby to cast directly from molten aluminium.
