Anniversary of fatal shipwreck
Yesterday was the 100th anniversary of the shipwreck with the second highest number of fatalities in New Zealand maritime history — the Tararua. which struck a reef off Waipapa Point, on the southeastern end of the South Island on April 29, 1881. Of the 151 people on board, 131, including many women and children, died. Only 74 bodies were recovered, washed onto the shore. The Tararua was a screw steamer of 523 tons, built in Dundee in 1864. It sailed from Port Chalmers at 5 p.m. on April 28. bound for Melbourne via Bluff and Hobart. No course had been given, ■ as the vessel was being steered by the land.
