Call for continued subsidies
PA Wellington Private hospitals must continue to receive an adequate Government subsidy to keep their place in the health system, according to an article in the latest New Zealand Medical .Journal.” Private hospitals carry a considerable case load, with an emphasis on common disorders and a short hospital stay, the article said. The private sector accounted for 17.8 pcr cent of all hospital beds. Slightly loss than one-third of surgical admissions to hospitals were to private ones. Economies and continuing to provide up-to-date facilities were the main problems faced by private hospitals. "These hospitals provide a service that would, today, be impossible to find elsewhere in the health system. A continuing adequate subsidy is to everyone's advantage.”
