Qantas award to Auckland journalist

PA j Auckland David McLoughlin, of the ■New Zealand Herald.” has been adjudged the 1980 New Zealand Journalist of the Year.

McLoughlin, formerly of the newspaper's Wellington bureau but now working at Auckland, was presented with his prize — a return trip to London and a trophy — at the annual Qantas Press Awards function in Auckland. Susan Maxwell, also of the "New Zealand Herald, - ’ was awarded the runner-up prize by the judges. Mr Trevor Sykes, editor of the “Bulletin.'' Sydney. Mr Christopher Anderson, deputy editor of the "Sydney Morning Herald.” and Mr James Eames, corporate publicity manager of Qantas. Graeme Skellern, of the "Sunday Times” was highly commended for his portfolio of entries.

Kate Coghlan, of the ‘'Dominion,” won the young reporter award for 1980. with John Clarke, of the “New Zealand Herald,” runner-up. Paul Benseman, of the "Evening Post," was 'highly commended. Donna Chisholm, of the “Auckland Star,” won the

award for the best single story of 1980 with her article on a young leukemia sufferer. Paul Anderson, of the “Auckland Star,” won the press photographer of 1980 award. Murray Job. also of the “Auckland Star.” was runner-up. and another “Auckland Star” photographer. Trevor Coppick, was highly commended.

Peter Drury, formerly of the "Waikato" Times” ' but now of the “New Zealand Herald.” was judged to have taken the best single press photograph of 1980 with his study of a St Bernard dog and' pups. Drury was also runner-up in the young press photographer award section’ which was won by Murray Job. Vicky Wardell, of the “Auckland Star,” was highly commended.

The photographic judges were Mr Max Ross, photographic manager of News, Ltd, Sydney, and Mr Warren Clarke, visual services controller of Qantas. Robert Brockie, of the “National Business Review,” was awarded the cartoonist prize by the judge, Mr Jeff Hook, of the “Sun News Pictorial,” Melbourne. Tom Scott, of the "Listener,” was runner-up.
