Runway work in a year?
Construction of Christchurch Airport’s runway extension may start -next year, between April and September. City councillors were told yesterday that work on a required deviation of Harewood Road around the longer runway could start in October. The public utilities committee learned that the Civil Aviation Division wanted a runway 300 m longer than that planned by the council. That would leave the airport geared for two particular services — a stretched DCB service to Singapore,, and a regular Boeing 747 service to South America — according to the. Assistant Airport Director (Mr M. T. Sevier). The extra runway length might cost about $300,000 but funds were available, Mr Sevier said.
