Mohammad Nazar, aged 21, a non-commissioned officer from the Soviet-backed Afghan Army stands in front of the Soviet-built T54 tank in which he defected to Pakistan by driving across the Afghan border into Chaman, in Pakistan’s south-west province of Baluchistan on April 12. Afghanistan has asked Pakistan to return the tank used by Nazar, who tricked his superiors into allowing him to test drive the tank to locate a mechanical problem. He dumped a colleague out of the vehicle then made a dash for the border.
