Debbie Randell hits record golf round
Nelson reporter Miss Debbie Randell, the No. 1 player in the Nelson-Marlborough-West Coast Russell Grace team, hit a 6-under-par 67 on the Nelson Golf Club course yesterday. This is the lowest score ever hit by a woman on this course. According to the N.Z.L.G.U. 1980 yearbook, nobody in New Zealand has bettered this 6 under standard scratch score. There is some doubt however, if it will be recognised as a course record. The matter may be resolved during the Russell Grace tournament, which commences on the Nelsom course next Monday.
Matters to be clarified include the tees from which shots must be played at some holes and whether two
temporary greens in use satisfy record requirements. The obviously delighted Miss Randell, now on a plus 1 handicap was out in 35 (2 under) and home in 32 (4 under). She is already credited with having carded the best gross of 72 on this course but the record, of the same score is credited to Jillian Bannan (now a professional in Auckland) who hit 72 in 1973. Miss Randell’s card showed birdies on the second, sixth, ninth, eleventh, thirteenth and fifteenth holes, an eagle at the tenth and bogeys at the eighth and sixteenth. She had 30 putts in the round including two 3 putt greens — one of these being the par 5 thirteenth where she putted for an eagle and finished with a par.
