Ronald Biggs
Sir,—l am not usually moved to write comments on subjects such as Ronald Biggs’s release, but feel that some cogent details ought to be placed before the attention of many who may agree with L. Clarke (April 27). It should surely be conceded that the purpose of a prison sentence is primarily to “rehabilitate” (where possible) rather than to wreak vengeance. This appears
to have been achieved, albeit by other means, in Biggs's case, as he has lived as a lawabiding citizen of Brazil for about seven years. I cannot see that anything would be achieved by returning him to a British jail save the satisfying of the blood-lust of those clamouring for revenge — this at the cost (by no means cheap) of keeping a man at Her Majesty's expense. I find this the. most sickening aspect of the whole affair.—Yours, etc., T. C. NICHOLLS. April 27, 1981.
