Woolston slumps to second big defeat
For the second time in four matches Woolston W.M.C. has suffered a heavy Rothmans Soccer League defeat.
On March 28, it was hammered, 7-1, by’ Gisborne City. and on Satuday received a bigger hiding when it was thrashed. 8-0. byMount Wellington at Auckland. The Mount scored four times in each half, with Ricky Herbert. Mike Groom, and Keith Nelson scoring two each, John Leijh, with a 25metre drive, and David Leakey once each.
Seven minutes from the end the score was still 4-0, but the floodgates opened again, and four goals came in those final minutes.
Woolston found it was being punished for defensive errors and its player-coach, Trevor Reece, believes a big part of the problem is that the players tend to ‘‘ball watch” too much. . “We’re not as bad as the score suggests; but we’ve got to try and instill more aggression into the lads,” he said.
Reece said that it was a similar performance to that
when Woolston lost heavily to Gisborne, “but the Mount were not as good, or as aggressive, as Gisborne.” In Wellington, Hamilton picked up a good point when it drew, 1-1, with National Mutual Miramar. Keith Niederer gave it the lead midwajthrough the first half, but Arthur Brown equalised with a fine goal in the second half.
Hanimex-North Shore was not overly impressive in beating Takapuna Citv, 4-2 in Auckland. It was 1-1 at half-time. Kevin Wevmouth having given Shore the lead, but Terry Howard equalised. Goals by- Brian McKeown and Kerry Hales gave Shore a good 3-1, Barrv Wevmouth pulled one back, but Keith Hobbs added the fourth goal near the end.
