Paeroa dries as volunteers help clean up
PA Hamilton Paeroa hung its belongings out to dry in the sun yesterday as hordes of volunteers arrived in the town to help with the huge flood clean-up. They came in cars, trucks, vans, and buses from all over Waikato and Bay of Plenty armed with gumboots, shovels, and: brooms. Some were members of service clubs, some of political parties, and others just wanted to lend a hand' with the mopping up during 'the Easter holidays. There was plenty of work for them.
The. cleaning has to be done quickly. Floodwaters which swept through muth of Paeroa almost a week ago were full of raw sewage and since then the water has retreated leaving the sewage drying out lying in homes and on streets. Throughout the worst-hit areas families have shifted all their possessions out on to front lawns, draping bedding arid clothes over fences and verandas as Fire Service trucks hose out.the worst of the mud. .. A total of 630 people still have no homes to go to and are billeted out in the town. -' . .
