Chathams air link
PA - Wellington Nine proposals have been lodged with' the Internal Affairs Department for a new air link between Wellington, the Chatham Islands, and Christchurch. At the start of the year the department threw the service open-to offers, in the hope of lifting it out. of the red. At present Safe Air runs the r service using Bristol freighters with a special compartment fitted for passengers. . The service is now losing about $528,000 a year, , paid for by the department. With the sealed Karewa Point air-
strip becoming availaoie on the islands in a few months, the department is considering the alternatives to Safe Air. A departmental spokesman said that the technical merits of the proposals were being discussed with the Ministry of Transport. The discussions covered such matters as looking at requirements for fuel, payload, su &' ■ gested frequency, and budgets. The department wants the service to cope with about 4000 passengers a year and to have some room ■ for expansion. A decision will probably •be made at the end of April.
