Teacher jailed for life

A secondary school teacher was yesterday sentenced to. life imprisonment after he was found guilty of .the murder of .Peter Stafford Ferry at Pahiatua on DecemRaymond Hancock, aged 26, of Woodville, Was'found guilty at the end of a two-day trial in the High Court at Palmerston North.
Hancock, who had earlier pleaded not guilty to the charge at a depositions hearing iwass sen; gave its decision. Earlier yesterday. Hancock
said he nad no intention of killing Mr Ferry. He had wanted, to confirm what his wife had earlier told him on December 4, that she had had intercourse with Mr Ferry the day before. The trial heard how over several weeks Hancock was suspicious about his wife having an affair with Mr Ferry, but only on; the morning of the death was- he able to confirm his suspicions. Counsel (Mr T- A. de Cleene) called on the jury to return a lesser verdict of manslaughter because of .prdypcati.on.v • -v -.r. ■The Crown Prosecutor (Mr ./Thomson) /smd; that a clear case of murder had been proven.
