CRICKET was probably first played by shepherds with.a ball being bowled at the wicket gate-of a sheepfold and the shepherds hitting it away with their crooks. By 1365 the game was so popular in England that King Edward 111 forbade it, saying that it interfered with archery practice. Edward VI banned the game in 1477. He fixed fines and two years in prison for playing cricket, and three years in prison for letting it be played on a person's land. It was not until 1784 that cricket was declared a legal sport in England.

In early cricket underarm bowling was allowed. In 1835 the hand was allowed to go just to shoulder height. In 1864 overarm bowling was allowed. NETBALL was adapted from the American game of basketball which was invented in 1891. Netball was first played in Britain in 1895 when two wastepaper baskets were hung on the walls at either end of a gymnasium. The highest international netball score was recorded «■ when New Zealand beat I Northern Ireland 112-4 in I 1963.
