Pensioner-flat work to get Govt aid

Parliamentary reporter Financial assistance for improving pensioner rental flats ' built more than 25 years ago was announced yesterday by the Minister of Housing (Mr Quigley). “Loans of up to $6600 a unit, at 9 per cent, will be made available to local authorities and other welfare or charitable organisations concerned with pensioner rental housing,” he said. Mr Quigley said that the subsidised elderly person rental-flat policy was introduced in 1950 and, consequently, there were now units in need of refurbishing.

“For example, the Christchurch City Council built 26 pensioner units from its own resources in 1938, and it is now necessary that they be modernised to present-day standards," he said-

“Responsibility for improving pensioner fiats is essentially a matter for the local authority or welfare organisation.' concerned, but the Government -is pleased to be able to help those with flats in need of improvement, who have been unable to accumulate funds for maintenance because of previous rental policies,” said Mr Quigley.
