An application from the Shirley, club for premier rugby league status this season was last evening declined by the Canterbury board of control. In support of its request; a letter from the Shirley club outlined its record , in the Qantas-Radio. Avon tournament. Shirley beat Kaiapoi in the opening round before!
being eliminated by Sydenham on Sunday. The letter said (that Shirley feared that it would lose its best players if its application was not granted. It added that the future of the club might rest on the board’s decision. However, members of the board considered that Shirley should first prove itself in the premier B division, a ;rade that it has yet to win-
