Sunday Trader lands the odds

From

J.J. BOYLE

Nelson Sunday Trader, an oddson favourite, was completing a T-A.B. treble worth $824.90 when he won the Black 'and White Handicap in style at Richmond yesterday. Mr John Jervis’ big four-year-old coasted along easily about three lengths from the pace coming to the straight and with a fluent lengthening of stride loped into the lead and won hands down by three parts of a length. Mr Jervis, who also trains Sunday Trader at Levin, was not finding a win at Nelson a new experience. He owned Credit Note, winner of a Caltex Cup at a Nelson!

meeting from the stable of Garth Ivil. Tanner gave added value to first-day form by finishing gamely into second. He was also runner-up to Sunday Trader on Saturday. The Westport-owned and trained Gaelic Bid improved a consistent record by battling into third, clear of the others. Bruce Compton gave the second favourite, Laala Rookh, the run of the race in the trailing position but the grey could not find anything extra in the straight and was a weakening sixth. Riccarton’s Bijou Lad was an expensive, favourite in the Turuturu Lodge Handi cap, first leg on the T.A.B.

treble, but Chain still made it a victory for Canterbury. A seven-year-old Wandering Eyes mare owned and trained at Washdyke by Mr Bill Grant, Chain came from the back for a surprise victory over Big Head, a littlefancied runner from the Beri stable at Riccarton. Ida, Ruvain and Leggy Lee made an all-North Island finish of the Wakatu Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. treble. Ida was completing a double at the meeting for the Woodville stable of Scott Hammersley, who also won the Nelson Cup with Kaitoa.

Like Chain, Ida was sired by Wandering Eyes.
