Weak demand for calves

The start of the 1981 calf selling season on Thursday was very disappointing for vendors.

In spite of the guaranteed beef prices for next season, values at Culverden were well behind sales last year. Lack of feed in most North Canterbury districts was the main restriction at the sale. The buying power was limited to just a few farmers. Some cattle went to the West Coast but most stayed in the Amuri district. Some very well grown calves were offered. The best of the Cheddar Valley property of the Lands and Survey Department, a small line of Angus from J. Hunt, and the best of some Charolais cross steers from Mrs M. F. Vernon, attracted the attention of several buyers. The best price for steer calves was $lB2 and for heifers $l5l. Sales included: — Steer calves.
