Le Bons Bay drainage
Some of Le Bons Bay’s drainage problems should soon be over. The North Canterbury Catchment Board had approved a 50 per cent subsidy for a $12,000 drainage scheme, a meeting of the Akaroa County Council has heard. The county engineer (Mr K. Paulin) said a meeting of residents affected by the scheme would be called to discuss its finance. The council would contribute towards the cost, while residents would be asked to pay according to the benefit they would receive. Two drains would be upgraded to improve the drain-
age at the Lavericks Bay intersection. Should the scheme go ahead, flooding at the intersection would only occur about every 20 years, Mr Paulin said. Gig application One horse and gig business in Akaroa was enough, the council was told. The Akaroa Community Council had declined an application by Messrs D. Thurston, R. Herber, and R. Gilbert for a permit to run a horse and gig during fine week-ends. Museum payment “A bit on the nose,” was how the county chairman (Mr T. J. Brocherie) des-
cribed a Canterbury Museum request for an ex gratia payment of $ll7. "I think this is getting completely out of hand. We have already had one increase,” Mr Brocherie said. The County Clerk (Mr G. E. Hunn) said the council had already paid an extra $lB3 to the museum this year. The council turned down the museum’s request. Wharf traffic Akaroa’s wharf renovations had resulted in more fishing boats unloading there, Mr Paulin. A lot of boats working between Timaru and Akaroa were now coming to Akaroa to unload.
