Trial ordered
An Auckland man, aged 40, has been committed for trial in the High Court after a two day hearing in the District Court at Christchurch on seven charges of false pretence. The charges relate to a cosmetics business operated from a shop and a laboratory in a Christchurch Messrs C. A. Pilgrim and D F. Pfestney, -Justices of the Peace, held that there was sufficient evidence to commit the defendant on all charges. : He was remanded on bail to May 4 pending his trial. The bail terms were set at $lO,OOO self, with two, sureties of $5OOO. ; Counsel’s application for
continued suppression of the defendant’s name, first granted in Auckland, was granted, but with a proviso that he must furnish medical reports supporting the submissions that publication- of name would be to the detriment of the health of the defendant’s wife and mother. Dr R. E. Harrison said, in seeking a discharge of the defendant on all charges, that it was not sufficient to prove that he made untrue statements, or promises which were not carried out. He said that almost without exception there was a written contract setting out certain terms between each complainant and a company "which was not the defendant.’.’ .
