Pollution fines to increase
Norway plans to extend its pollution coastline regulations from four miles to 12 miles after a series of oil dumping which has ruined beaches and harmed wildlife. Norway is the latest of several nations to tighten up their pollution regulations. In this case, not only is the regulatory distance being increased but much stiffer penalties will be imposed on vessels which dump oil in ' Norwegian teritorial waters.
Norinform, Norway’s agency for the protection of the environment, has announced that fines, confiscation of ships’ certificates, and imprisonment can be imposed on those violating the new laws. Bermuda, too, is strengthening its pollution laws by tightening regulations on ships seeking refuge in territorial waters. Control over such vessels will be supported by stronger anti-pollution laws to protect the island's marine life.
The action was taken after last month’s spillage by the Pana-manian-registered Eastern Mariner 1 of chemicals which killed fish and sea birds and posed a threat to human life.
