Student bursaries

Sir,—l agree with Alan Jones that bursaries to students funded by the taxpayer, are unpalatable. They are one more example of a burgeoning welfare system we soon will not be able to afford. Ms Amos proclaims the students’ right to ’ an education, and claims that I and other taxpayers must pro-, vide it for them. What about my right to the benefits of my . own production, some of which ; is channelled off to pay stus dents’ bursaries. Because of the distance between the person who creates the Wealth (the» taxpayer) arid the person who consumes it (in this case; the student), the responsibility for its careful use seems diminished. I do not deny any individual the access to learning facilities but disagree with a system which forces me to underwrite the expenses incurred.—Yours, etc., KEN BROUGHAM. March 24, 1981.
