Powley stands out in Hazlett Stakes

Special correspondent Dunedin

Powley’s splendid record as a metric-miler suggests she will prove superior to King Kaka and the older horses in the James Hazlett Stakes at the Otago Racing Club’s meeting tomorrow. Powley’s 10 wins include the One Thousand Guineas at Riccarton, Dunedin Guineas, and Southland Guineas, all over 1600 m. She

finished a close second to Summer Haze in the Wellington Stakes after forcing the pace for a Imin 34.75 s metric mile. Powley won easily against six three-year-old fillies over 1600 m at Oamaru last Monday.

Three-year-olds have a good record in the Hazlett Stakes. Princess Mellay. from the same stable as Powley, won in 1969 and others in the same age group won the next four contests. They were Susan Jane, Smart Mellay, Jury and Pakistan Flight. Powley has 53kg, a kilogram less than scale weight in her first test against the older horses.

King Kaka, the other three-year-old in the field, was conceding her 2.5 kg when lie ran Powley to half a head in the Dunedin Guineas after a check in the run home. He concedes her a kilogram tomorrow. King Kaka was again run-ner-up to Powley in, the Gore Guineas Trial (1400 m and third in the Southland Guineas. King Kaka was spelled after the Southland Guineas and has come back to win three sprints in a row, the most recent at Ashburton 11 days ago when his Imin 9.9 s for 1200 m was 0.2 s outside the track record. He is at a high level of fitness to extend Powley and others. Caparo is at an appealing position in the handicap with 2kg less than scale weight. He is a smart galloper which should run a merry metric mile while fresh.

Caparo was a winner over 1400 m at Wingatui in November and carried on to win middle distance races at Omakau, Waimate and Invercargill. RACE 1
