Exciting finish in triples bowls
June Irvine and her Burnside team of Chris Thomas and Mattie Mawson had an exciting, 22-21, win against Vonnie Flood (St Albans) in the final at Morrison Avenue yesterday of the Christchurch - Women’s Bowls champion-of-champions
triples. Mrs Irvine, whose previous best effort in a centre tournament was a fours second, scored the winning shot with her last bowl on an extra end. Earlier she had looked beaten when Miss Flood, whose team was Doris Rollatt and May Sievwright, led 19-15 with just three ends left. However, a four on the twentieth end put Mrs Irvine ahead, 21-19, and it was Miss Flood who forced the extra end by scoring a two. An extra end was also required in one of the semifinals, Miss Flood winning it to beat Betty Steele .(Linwood). 26-25. The other semi-final was almost as close, Mrs Irvine getting home, 18-16, against Julie Dickson (Woolston Park). Originally, it had been intended to resume the rainplagued tournament today, but a decision to restart the semi-finals yesterday morning was made after the drying winds of Wednesday evening.
