N.Z. Sports Foundation streamlines guidelines

PA Wellington The New Zealand Sports Foundation has streamlined the guidelines it uses to determine levels of financial aid to sports. Details have been announced in Wellington by the foundation’s chairman, Mr Graham Davy. The foundation, which is funded by both private business and the Government but tied to neither, will now consider'.', aid applications under six categories. They are: ■ < ' • • Elite: To be restricted to athletes of proven ability whose world standing clearly indicates medal potential in world championships, Olympic Games or equiva- . _ :. ■ I : International: For athletes

expected to compete “with real distinction’’ at world championships or equivalent level; Developmental: For young athletes -of outstanding ability; ’ - Coaching: Available to coaches where “it is clear the assistance will result in an exceptional return”; Eudcational, Medical and Scientific: Will be available to athletes, coaches and teachers, medical and scientific personnel and/or institutions consistent with the foundation’s objectives. Special: “These grants will relate to sports where New Zealand’s international standing necessitates special consideration in order to encourage individual development to' top international standard.”

Mr Davy said that the new guidelines provided greater flexibility in dealing with applications and were designed to strengthen support of athletes.
