Wood for fuel

Sir; — When I read your article, “Wood . hottest thing in Fuel,” (“The Press” February 27), I felt as t though I must have dozed off and someone had turned the clock back. Am I naive, or is this technology with blinkers on? Wise, indeed, if people all over the world could get to work,'including the unemployed, and plant trees in every available spot, to reverse the process of exploitation and desert-promo-tion; and to lift the treecover far above the danger ‘ level of one third of the Earth’s surface, so that «sufficient oxygen is formed.. The . .Worldwatch Institute representative mentions the hazards of the Wood-for-fuel scheme further exceeding regeneration of our shrinking forests. Suppose we were to plant mixed species of ..trees “flat out” for the next, twenty years, and subdue, rather than accelerate,, our “heeds” : for fuel and wrapping paper etc., then oxygen and food would become so plentiful, we would evolve a world of deep breathing,, fit, calm and peaceful people. — Yours, etc. ” N. W. MILANOVICH. February 28, 1981.
