Polish climber flown out

PA Timaru The leader of a Polish climbing expedition was evacuated by helicopter from Mt Cook yesterday after a fall on Saturday night. Mr Jerzy Kukuczka, aged 33, fell while his three-man party was descending from Green Saddle,, north of Mt Cook, after a successful ascent of Mt Hicks. Mr Kukuczka suffered leg and arm injuries, but was able to walk to the Empress Hut with the help of his companions, one of whom .was a doctor* ■ . •’»- ; The group sheltered, in the hut for the night, before alerting Mt Cook. National Park headquarters yesterday morning. A Whirlwide helicopter, piloted by Mr R. Small, was called in from Tekapo, to pick up the injured man.

Mt Cook’s chief . ranger, Mr B. Youngman, said Mr Kukuczka had been . lucky that expert medical aid had been available throughout his ordeal. He was treated at park headquarters for bruising and torn ligaments and was reported to be resting comfortably last evening.
