Bands quiet on ’Bok decision
Representatives from Canterbury’s. 1 brass bands met on Saturday (evening and were expected to discuss their attitude to playing at the Springbok test match at Lancaster Park in August After the meeting, however, the president of the Canterbury Provincial 'Brass Bands Association (Mr G. W. Butler) said the association did not wish to have anything published about the issue. “We will be making a written statement for publication in about two days and we don’t want anything else published,” he said y :terday.
Last week, the secretary Of the association (Mrs J. Caldwell) said she would raise the issue at the association’s quarterly meeting on Saturday. Local service bands have not yet been approached to play at the test match. Last year, the New Zealand Army 1 Band was engaged to play .before test matches , at Lancaster Park, instead of curtain-raisers being played, to avoid .damaging the ground. No policy, on involvement with the Springbok tour , has been announced by the Ministry of Defence.
