Wellington was a clear win-' ner of the first national inter-i centre junior bowls tourna-' jment, which was. completed> ion the Papanui green at the; [week-end. i However, the absence of : [one of the four finalists, Wai-! ikato-Thames Valley, was al (setback and the reason whyj 'the northern zone winner was! not . there cast its owni shadow. The team was absent because of the death of its manager Mr Bill Thomson, in a road accident near Sanson early on Saturday while the bowlers were on their way to Wellington where they had hoped to get a flight to Christchurch. ■The other two ' visiting teams, Southland and Wellington, had reached Christchurch before the news of Mr Thomson’s death became known and it was decided to proceed;. with the final, thei [draw standing and byes being} introduced. Wellington and Southland were level, with three wins each, after the first two rounds on Saturday. Christchurch had not had a win at; this stage and was but of; contention.
