Chch driver wins N.Z. T.Q. title

Christchurch’s Wayne Denovan became the New Zealand T.Q. champion at Ruapuna Speedwayon Saturday evening. Driving .the snappy Rickman three-quar-ter midget car, Denovan gained two seconds and a first to be the first Canterbury competitor to take the title. Some of the highly favoured North Island competitors, including the defending champion, Murray Worboys, were stranded in Wellington and unable to compete. However, Steve Todd (Napier) took second place and third •went to Pat Chapman (Stratford). The consistent Alan Duthie, of Christchurch, took fourth place on the points table. The sidecar favourites, Bruce and Norma Turner, were back in form after winning the New Zealand championship in Wanganui. Bruce’s brother, Wayne Turner, created a few surprises with his new sidechair, taking two firsts from Bruce, one of them being a very close fast finish. Sam McAllister lost his swinger as they powerd out-of the tapes in the third sidecar race but nobody was hurt. The midget speedcars provided some thrills as Peter Robinson ended up piggy-backing Allan Palmer when trying to pass a bit too hastily. Bryce Doidge also spun, stopping three cars, and so the race was stopped and run later. The sprintcars had a pairs race consisting of Tony Demmocks and Roger Gleeson against Selwvn Everett and Gary Jemmett. Over three races, Jemmett and Everett won, 19 points to 10. Results. — N.Z.
