Emergency beds

Passengers who are stranded in Christchurch b; the airline strikes will have access to a cheap bed if they belong to the Youth Hostels Association. The. association has received Health Department approval to use rooms in the Peterborough Centre site of the Arts Centre for overflow ' accommodation. The Peterborough Centre is the former Teachers’ College building in Peterborough Street. The public relations

officer for the association (Mr A. R. Metcalf) said that the two Y.H.A hostels inChristchurch were full. The association used Chester Hall as an overflow hostel in busy summer periods, and ’-d gained an extension to use it this week, but the hall could not be used after last night, as there was a previous booking. Mr Metcalf said the Arts Centre rooms would provide only minimum accommodation giving people a roof over their heads and a

mattress to sleep on. It would be available only to Y.H.A.- members and like all Y.H.A. hostels would be locked up during the day. Charges would be lower than the usual hostel rates. Chester Hall provided beds for 30 to 50 people a night. Mr Metcalf said he hoped the Arts Centre rooms would cater for most of those, although some people might prefer to stay at Christchurch Airport. Beds at the centre would be available from this evening.
