Meek surrender
NZPA-Reuter Berbice The West Indies, meanwhile, scored another one-day victory over England yesterday as the storm clouds gathered over the Guyana leg of the tour. England’s hopes of gaining revenge for its'defeat by two runs in the first limited-over match in St -Vincent rose briefly when, after scoring a paltry 137 all out, it captured the first two West Indies wickets for only 11 runs. But a determined third-wic-ket stand of 74 in 17 overs between Desmond Haynes and Everton Mattis swung the
match in the West Indies favour. The off spinner, John Emburey, the- tourists’ most erfective bowler, removed both within the space of five runs but Clive Lloyd and Larry Gomes inched their side to a six-wicket victory with an unbeaten fifth-wicket stand of 48. . . . England put in to bat again submitted meekly to the West Indies’ bowlers. It was all out for 137 in 47.2 overs and for once it could not blame a relentless fast-bowl* ing barrage‘for its plight. England loss its first five
wickets for only 62, and four were taken by the off. spin of Viv Richards and Larry Gomes.
Richards had the satisfaction of bowling England’s top batsman, Geoff Boycott, as he made room to cut, and Gomes wrecked the middle order by removing David Gower, Mike Gatting and Roland Butcher.’ Colin Croft, the big Guyanari, who has -been the scourge of England’s batting throughout the tour, then ripped through the rest, finishing with jhree for nine from 38 balls* M .
