Insulin move welcomed
PA Rotorua The standardising of in--sulin to only one strength in New Zealand from March 1 will have tremendous gains for diabetics. according to the Medical Officer of Health at Rotorua, Dr G. A. West. In the past, diabetics have used one of three different strengths of insulin but once their present prescriptions are finished they will change over to the new insulin, UlOO. “The changeover is in line with other Englishspeaking countries and will make it simpler for diabetics to adjust the dosage of their insulin,” Dr West said. Confusion about different insulin strengths and varying scales and sizes of syringes has been a main cause of dosage errors. It would be harder for diabetics to make mistakes using the UlOO, said a Rotorua Hospital physician, Dr B. J. Bruns. The new insulin must be used with the new UlOO syringe which will be available.
