Regional aid probe
The Canterbury United Council will try to identify “slow growth” parts of the region as a start towards attracting Government regional development aid for them.
But some council members have said that even those areas might not be eligible for aid under stringent Government guidelines. “I don’t think we have much opportunity at all to make much headway under existing provisions,” said Cr T. M'. Inch.
In a meeting with the Minister of Regional Development (Mr Birch) this month, the United , Council chairman (Mr C. N. Mackenzie) was told that designation of the entire region as a development area was not necessarily the best way to stimulate economic growth in Canterbury. Mr Birch, said there might be local forms of aid 1 if specific areas could show that they met development criteria.
