C.N.G. outlets for N.I.
PA Wellington Plans to establish a North Island chain of compressed natural gas outlets were announced yesterday, by Caltex Oil’s managing director, Mr W. C. Dunning. Caltex expects that its first outlets in Wellington, Hamilton and Auckland, will be selling C.N.G. to the public within six months, and that the North Island network will be fully functional within 18 months..
Mr Dunning said the C.N.G. outlets would be established at existing Caltex petrol service stations in the three North Island centres. Those service stations would become dual C.N.G.petrol outlets. Initial investment is estimated at $23 million which, Mr Dunning said, would lead to a direct foreign exchange saving of more than $27 million when the chain was fully functional. C.N.G., he said, sold for about half the price of petrol.
' The present -average cost of C.N.G. is 32c a litre equivalent, compared with 58c for petrol, Mr Dunning said Caltex had planned Its network to enable motorists on long trips to run entirely on C.N.G.
