Half wheat tested
About half of the current season’s wheat crop has now been tested for quality by the Wheat Research Institute in Christchurch. The director of the institute, Mr R. W. Cawley, said on Tuesday afternoon that the number of samples then received for testing was up to 5000, still mainly from Canterbury. Quality, he said, remained good and better, than last year. The high quality of. this year’s crop was confirmed this week by Mr C. A.
McNally, the general manager of Zealandia Milling (1980), Ltd and Mr W. J. Wood, the company’s grain and mill manager, who said that this seemed to be a very good year for grain. As a whole grain seemed to be of very good quality — from the point of view of protein levels and general characteristics. New Rongotea came in for very favourable mention and under the Wheat Research Institute’s mechanical dough
development testing system ; Oroua has scored very ‘ highly, and Hilgendorf and Kopara are also very good. But because of its very good size, the grain of Ron-’ gotea has presented some difficulties in cleaning and dressing through existing machinery, and the better yields being obtained from crops this season have presented some storage ’ problems at mills when deliverieshave been greater than farmers .had estimated
