Lead-free petrol urged
PA Wellington New Zealand will be badly cut of step if it does" not follow Australia’s move to adept lead-free petrol by 1385, according to a statement by Friends of the Earth. Last year’s report by the Australian Governments committee on motor-vehicle emissions said fuel savings of up to 4.4 million barrels of oil could be the result if Australia made such a move, the conservation organisation said. Australian state Transport Ministers last week opted for lead-free petrol. In New South Wales Government figures shew that individual motorists will save 10 per cent to 15 per cent on fuel bills with . a combination of lead-free petrol and catalytic converters, the statement said. So long as New Zealand retained leaded petrol 3t would have to pass up the opportunity to improve air quality, as catalytic corn verters will not work in the presence of lead it said.
