Outrageous’ driving

, Greymouth reporter A man who drove down Riccarton Road on Christmas Eve, standing, with the upper part of his body through the sun roof of hi's car had said he was “trying to get some fresh air. Judge McAloon was told by Senior Traffic Sergeant R. .J Gilshnan in the District Court at Greymouth yesterday. Andrew Alexander Jasper, aged 20, an engineering officer (Mr J. B. Annabell) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless driving.

Mr Gilshnan said that the defendant’s car was seen at 11.14 p.m. travelling at 50 km/h with both the defend-

ant and his passenger standing up in the vehicle. “In my time on the bench, I have never heard of any driving like this,” said the Judge. “It’s outrageous. Riccarton Road is one of the busiest in the South Island and it would have been more so on Christmas Eve. “You have shown scant regard for other road users, and during your term of disqualification you should think of the privileges associated with holding a driver’s licence," said the Judge.

The defendant was convicted and fined $2OO and disqualified from driving for six months.
