Waikari heads swimming carnival
Waikari retained the (points banner in the final 1 inter-club points swimming arnival of the season’ for 'North Canterbury non-affil-J..ted clubs. Waikari won an exciting contest in w’hich it alternated with Amberley, which finally gained most points., - ' The award is made, however, on the > number of points gained by a club averaged over its competitors and this put Waikari first, with Cheviot second and Amberley third. Eighty-three competitors took part, which was considered good for a cold water pool in cool weather. Waikari won the trophy for the third time in four carnivals with, an average of 15.2 points gained from a total of 365 points averaged over 24 swimmers. The other results were:-— Cheviot, total points 257, 19 swimmers, average points 13.5; Amberley, 372, 29, 12,8; Culverden 75. 6. 12.5; Hawarden, 119, 13, 9.1; Waiau, 159, 21, 7.5. A total of 114 swimmers
have entered for the North Canterbury championships at unberley ’this Saturday.- The programme . includes 97 events. Waikari ■ has 1 ’ the most swimmers for the championship with an entry pf 30, one more than Amberdey. The other entries are Waiau 24, Cheviot 20,. H warden 7, Culverden 4. If a postponement is necessary the . championships will be transferred to March Thirteen swimmers from North Canterbury schools qualified in a recent country high schools championships, at Sockbum Park, to go forward to the Canterbury secondary schools championships to be held at Queen Elizabeth II Park early in March. Hawarden was the 1 .ost successful with eight i ncluding two Waikari resi-. dents) being selected; Che--5 lot had four and Culverden J. - « / l The final meeting for the season of club delegates will be held at the home of Mrs E. Macgregor, Amberley - ich on March 11.
