Approval for marathon
NZPA Los Angeles The women's marathon has been given approval by the executive board of the International OljTnpic Committee and is likely to be included in the 1984 Olympic Games here. The decision, which has to be finalised by the full LO.C. I next September, was taken in spite of fierce opposition from the Soviet Union and East European countries. The women’s marathon has been fast-growing in popularity in the United States and Western Europe in recent years, but is virtually unknown in the- communist countries. The LO.C. almost accepted it at its session in Moscow last summer, but deferred a decision after pressure from East European members.
