Sir, — You and I, and this whole community, Jive in one of the most unhealthy and air-polluted cities in the world. An incompetent public transport set-up, and the threat of using precious electricity fc. a smelter with very dubious economic prospects, are going to cause me to make a political issue of electric cars and mini-coach operation, which are now an immediate practical proposition. The latest electric batteries, the proper alternative to a useless smelter, will now be about nine times as efficient as the heavy leadacid batteries of the past. In a hydro-electric country, why not hydro-electric cars? The madness of fossil-fuel-ing will make this city unfit to breathe in. — Yours, etc., R. T. SHIELDS. February 24, 1981,
