Chch base for health computer

The Cabinet decided yesterday that Christchurch • should become the national . centre of the Health Department’s $3O million computer network. The decision, which was announced by the Min- ! ister of Health (Mr Gair), , will mean the closing of the ' Auckland health computer * centre and a saving of. about I $BOO,OOO a year.

The decision is an endorsement of a recommendation made by the board ol review on health services computing in November, 1980, since when the proposal to consolidate the computer services in Christchurch has been discussed by the Hospital Boards’ Association, the Public Service Association, and the* staff of the Health Depart-j ment’s data-processing division.

Mr Gair said that the shift to a single computer centre would consolidate technical expertise ’and would provide for more effective management.

Although the Auckland computer centre would no longer be needed when the transfer to Christchurch was completed in about a ye'ai there was a continuing need for local computer support for northern hospital boards. Some data-processing staff would stay, in Auckland although the precise nature of their work had still to be decided.
