Oysters to be dearer
PA Invercargill Oysters will be dearer again this season, in spite of an effort to absorb cost and wage increases. Invercargill retailers say that raw oysters there will rise 12c to $1.92 a dozen, and cooked oysters will be up 3c to 23c each. The wholesale price to retailers has increased $4 a sack at the wharf at Bluff. Freight and opening costs make the cost $67 a sack
Retailers said the increase would not cover their increased costs, but they had to play their part in absorbing the costs as other sections of the industry had done. They felt that the $4-a-sack • increase to them was a distinct effort by merchants to absorb costs.
However, it is thought that oysters were far too dear for the market last season, arousing considerable buyer resistance. The oyster dredging season will start on Monday, provided the weather is suitable.
